This can be a historical question. Depending on the period in history ideas about the color and style of MOB and MOG have changed throughout the years, but some things have not changed. For instance, the mother of the bride should choose her gown first. The colors of both moms should co-ordinate with the colors in the wedding party. And finally the brides wishes and preferences are paramount in importance. The length and formality of the moms' dresses are usually determined by the time of day and venue. Some brides micromanage every aspect of their wedding including specifying: color, length, formality, etc for both moms. Others allow the moms to find dresses that suit their style and color choice. If in doubt ask the bride for direction and preferences.
